Slow Cruise News U.S.S. Simon Lake (AS-33) Our next reunion will be held 11 to 15 October in the Northern Virginia/DC area. The hotel will be the Courtyards by Marriott, Arlington Crystal City/Reagan National Airport, 2899 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, VA 22202-4039. There is a link on the web page to the hotel. We have one tour planned for the World War II Memorial and other places of interest along the way. At present the tour will cost $50.00 per person and is subject to change depending on the number of attendees. More details to follow. There will be a Simon Lake plaque dedication at the United States Navy Memorial on Friday, 12 October 2007 at 1300. We tried for a September date for the reunion but was unable to find anything that was affordable during that time frame. GOOD NEWS Gordon is doing as well as can be expected with his Parkinson’s remaining about the same. He goes for a checkup in June, which hopefully will bring some good news. Tommy is doing fine — feels good, but looks funny. He may have more surgery, for appearance sake, at some later date.
SIMON LAKE PLAQUE Due to the extraordinary generosity of one of our widows, Micky Baron, we were able to obtain our goal for the Simon Lake plaque at the Navy Memorial in Washington. It will become a reality at our dedicaton ceremony during this reunion. Enclosed with this newsletter is a “Free Navy Log Enrollment Form” for Simon Lake Members that is self explanatory. Also enclosed is an order form for a Plaque Replica, rather pricey, but hopefully for a good cause. MISCELLANEOUS We appreciate the effort that has been made to keep your personal data up to date. When you log on to the members list, take a few minutes to see if your information is correct. If you have any other information available, such as deaths, serious illness, good things, or anything else you consider newsworthy, that your other shipmates might enjoy, send it along by e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or snail mail to the address at the bottom of this newsletter. Also, feel free to send any comments you may have, good, bad or indifferent. Many thanks to all those who keep us up to date on our shipmates around the country. If you report a death be sure you verify the information. If you send e-mail please put Simon Lake in the subject line. The spam has become so bad that your message might get filtered to the junk file if there is not some form of recognition. DUES and MEMBERS As you may have noticed we have instituted a billing system for dues. It costs a bit more, but the results have been worth the cost. Most people don’t pay bills unless they get one! Many of our older members have dropped out of the Association for various reasons, resulting in a dwindling membership. If we keep the Simon Lake Association afloat we need some new members. Smooth Sailing Gordon and Tommy |
