Slow Cruise News At our last reunion we decided to do the reunion ourselves, utilizing the three Hampton Roads local guys, i.e. Gordon, Myron and Tommy. But after much discussion, we have decided we probably don’t have the time or energy, due to family needs, doctor’s appointments, and the time and effort that’s involved with running the hospitality room. We are reluctant to admit it, but age is also a big factor. Consequently, we are going to use the same reunion coordinators that we have been using. GOOD NEWS Gordon is doing well, and his Parkinson’s is about the same. He goes for a checkup soon, and hopefully the news will be good.. Tommy is doing fine and in good sprits. He has had some plastic surgery on his face that improved his appearance considerably. Our web site has fallen behind, but we hope to have it updated within the next few months, with 2007 reunion pictures, etc. The cost so far to keep it updated and running has been $500.00 per year. We would like to thank all of our shipmates who send in donations to keep us running. The Memorial Service at our last reunion in Washington D.C. was really nice. It was held at the Navy Memorial. We saw the plaque put in place, then we attended an IMAX film on Sea Power and , after that our Memorial Service was conducted. Three of our members took part in the service, Danny Poole, Myron Tauchen and Wayne Suckow. We have sent a copy of the plaque to Mrs. Mickey Baron. Without her generous support the plaque would not have become a reality. Gordon would like to emphasize that those who have not seen the World War II Memorial should do so. In his words, “ It’s beautiful beyond words. As I walked around the circle and observed what it stood for and all it said to me before I completed my walk I had tears in my eyes. It’s something every veteran should see.” Phone calls, e-mail, correspondence, continuous updating of the rosters, etc. still consumes a lot of our time. We also need your support and assistance, with reunions, change of address, change of e-mail address and other data in your profile. Look at the roster, e- mail roster, and the web site members page and let us know any changes you would like. We constantly have mail returned, and assume that it is due to a move that we are not aware of. We have lost track of several members. If you have any other information available that you think might be of interest to other members, please send it. You can either mail it or e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Tom’s e-mail has changed to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it although mail to his old address is being forwarded and will still work. Also, if you have any comments, good, bad or indifferent, please let us know. Many thanks to all those who keep us up to date on our shipmates around the country. If you report a death be sure you verify the information Dues!!! As of this date many members have not paid their dues for2008 and some are further behind than that. For those that have paid, keep up the good work. We appreciate your effort in keeping the Simon Lake Association afloat. On all of your e-mail, please indicate USS SIMON LAKE in the subject line. The spam has become so bad that a lot of mail is not read if the message is not readily recognized. !!!WE NEED NEW MEMBERS!!!
